New LED lighting technology
Radiant also has a new range of wall washers for either internal or external use. These can be set to function as desired – creating visual interest, highlighting features or making use of various colour changing effects. Complete down lights are also available in combinations of mini starlights of 1W, and combinations of 3×1W, 6×1W, 15×1W and 3×3W. For commercial outlets, track or surface spots that are ideal to highlight merchandise are available in various output strengths.
For fun, ambience and accent lighting, or for overcounter lights, Radiant has an array of LED products available such as rope light and tape light. These lights have many uses and are adaptable for external use and even in-water use. Tape lights are available on 5 meter reels that can be cut every 50mm. This improvement opens a huge new field of lighting. Radiant also markets a convenient 5-light starlight kit with controller which is easy to install and has many applications.
CREE technology & Radiant’s LED homebrew
Perhaps the most important addition to Radiant’s LED range is its CREE technology lamp replacement selection. Says Calitz: “These products all contain binned chips, which is important for quality and consistent light output. We have opted for 3W in 230v, GU10 (bayonet socket) as well as 12V, MR16 (bi-pin base) driver driven versions. There will also be 5W MR16, and new 230v GU10 6W which has a lumen output of around 460lm – something that is often not even attainable with an 8W version.” Because LED lamps project the light onto the area to be lighted, ‘less’ suddenly becomes a lot more.
This is good news for energy saving as one achieves maximum light output using less energy. Notes Calitz: “I think for projects and the discerning ‘green’ conscious person these solutions are ideal. They are competitively priced in comparison to other like advertised products. However, it is the intended long term savings that consumers should be aiming at. It is sensible to replace conventional lighting in stages.”
Radiant has one more ace up its sleeve that will appeal to the price conscious with a green conscience. Says Calitz: “Radiant is currently working on developing a range of LED lamps that will still be efficient but more affordable and will appeal to the serious entry level candidate. There will still be meaningful warrantees attached to both ranges that we will be proud to be marketing through our customer base.”
Global LED outlook & practical choices
Global researchers are also positive about the future of LEDs. While international market research from Pike Research predicts that by 2020, LEDs will cover 46% of the $4.4 billion US market for lamps in the commercial, industrial and outdoor stationary sectors.
As consumers start using alternative energy, the only way forward is LED and more mainstream applications in retail, commercial, industrial and municipal (streetlights) sectors will be driven by the greater energy efficiency, better performance and the low maintenance benefits of LEDs.
